Prevalence of Age-Related Macular Degeneration at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Pakistan

Purpose: To evaluate the frequency of Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) in patients presenting to a teaching hospital Pakistan, and find most common factors associated with high ARMD. Study Design: Descriptive Cross-sectional study. Place Duration Study: Layton Rehmatullah Benevolent Trust Free Eye Hospital Township Lahore from 1st January 2019 30th June 2020. Methods: A total 720 ages more than 60 years were included. Participants no media opacity selected randomly outpatient department. After which Informed consent was taken all participants for taking retinal images. 45 degree images using an Eight megapixel fundus camera (Topcon). Fundus fluorescein angiography Optical coherence tomography (OCT) conducted clinically diagnosed specifically designed proforma used document data like age & gender, smoking pattern, visual acuity far near vision, staging ARMD (if Present). Also recorded Blood pressure, fasting blood sugar level, cholesterol levels, height patient. Results: The number subjects participating study 720, among 350 (48.61%) male while 370 (51.39%) female. prevalence turned found be 5.27% (38/720) local population. having signs dry 25 (65.7%), those wet i.e., 13 (34.3%). Smoking commonly (36%). second association hypertension (21%). While Hyperlipidaemia (11%), Diabetes Mellitus type II (10%), obesity (6%)
 had lesser depression 92.1%. Conclusion: is frequent smokers they should educated about this risk.
